The McNeese Summer Middle School Band Academy provides an intense and exciting four days of education and preparation for student musicians and their continued band participation in the fall.  

Our summer academy is staffed by clinicians from our local five-parish area, McNeese Faculty, area band directors and student leadership of the McNeese Bands. Evening activities include sports and recreation, swimming, and a movie night. Students may participate as commuters or on-campus residents.  Dorm rooms and meals are available as part of the packages.

Directors, Coaches And Sponsors

Directors, coaches and sponsors are welcome to attend the full week of the academies, or stop by to observe individual instructional sessions.  Our summer band academies are designed to immerse the participants in a focused instructional and social environment for the week.    Adults are not permitted to be in student dorm rooms for any reason.  Resident students attending the academies are not permitted to leave campus for any reason.

The academy fee for a director staying on campus for the week is $225.  Anyone interested in attending for the week should call the McNeese Band Office to make arrangements.  337-475-5004 

Academy Requirements

  • Participants must have attended 6th or 7th grade in the ’17-’18 school year (will be in grades 7 or 8 in the fall of 2018), and have at least one year of participation in their school band program, and/or at least one year of private lesson study on a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument.

Academy Tuition & Fees

Residents:                                  $325 (includes tuition, housing, all daily meals, academy shirt & recreation)

Commuters:                              $225 (includes tuition, daily lunch and dinner, academy shirt & recreation)

Academy Content, Curriculum and Activities

  • All students participate in a full concert band, including rehearsals and a finale concert performance

  • Chamber group rehearsals and possible finale performances (flute choir, clarinet choir, sax ensemble, brass ensemble, etc.)

  • Jazz Band participation is an option for students playing trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, bass guitar and drum set

  • Afternoon recreation/social time including time in our campus recreation center, a pool night, and a movie night

  • Elective choices for specialty class sessions, including:

    • Introduction to marching band

    • Introduction to color guard (flags)

    • Introduction to jazz band and improvisation

    • Student Leadership Workshop

    • Conducting

    • Steel Drums

    • Sight Reading

General Academy Schedule

Sunday, June 9

3:30 P.M. Check-in for residents (on-campus, overnight)

4:30 P.M. Check-in for commuters (day) 

5:00 P.M.  Academy Meeting with Parents and Students

5:30 P.M.  Dinner for all students (Resident and Commuters) in the McNeese Band Hall

6:15 P.M.  Concert Band Placement Auditions; followed by music sectionals

8:30 P.M.  Dismissal for commuters


8:30 A.M.  First Session Begins

Noon  Lunch (included for all academy students)

5:30 P.M.  Dinner (included for all academy students)

8:30 P.M.  Wrap up & Daily Awards in band hall
